PASSED AWAY: April 17, 2018.
On April 17th, 2018, Arthur M. "Art" Brady, Jr. passed away following a year-long battle with cancer. Art, a life-long Kansas City resident, attended Bishop Hogan High School. Art received a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Missouri - Columbia, an AAS degree in Emergency Medical Services from Metropolitan Community College - Penn Valley, a certificate in Computer Information Systems from DeVry Institute of Technology, and a certificate in Biological Sciences from Creighton University. Art's career in EMS began at Worlds of Fun where he acted as an EMT, a Paramedic, and the First-Aid Supervisor. For the next thirty-five years, Art continued his work as a Paramedic providing his skills and expertise to patients served by Community Ambulance Service, Ambulance Services, Inc., Medical Center of Independence, Gold Cross Ambulance Service, and West Platte Fire Protection District. In 1987, while continuing to work in the field as a Paramedic, Art began his career at the Metropolitan Community College (MCC), where he has educated hundreds of emergency medical technicians and paramedics. Art has served in numerous roles at the college, including EMS clinical coordinator and EMS program director. In addition to his interest in EMS, Art was an amateur photographer whose work exhibited an exceptional talent. Art was also an avid reader and movie buff, who had a special interest in science fiction. Art will be truly missed in this community and by his fellow workers and friends.
TROOPER FRED GURTHIE - MISSOURI HIGHWAY PATROL - LOCAL RESIDENT

On August 1, 2011, Trooper Frederick F. Guthrie Jr., 46, of Platte City, MO, and his Patrol K-9 Reed, were assigned to Missouri River flood duty. They were working in the area of Big Lake on Missouri Highway 118 at Missouri Highway 111 in Holt County, MO when they were apparently swept away by swift flood water.
Trooper Guthrie joined the then Missouri State Water Patrol on January 2, 1994, and transitioned to a trooper with the merger to the Highway Patrol on January 1, 2011, where he was assigned to Troop A serving Platte County.
On Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at approximately 6:25 p.m. K-9 Reed was located in swift-moving floodwater approximately 100 yards from where Trooper Guthrie's Patrol truck and boat were located. K-9, Reed, was a five-year veteran with the Patrol.
On September 28, 2011, Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, regretfully announced the official death of Trooper Frederick "Fred" F. Guthrie Jr. This announcement followed the issuance of Letters of Independent Administration by Platte County Associate Circuit Judge, James Van Amburg to Trooper Guthrie's spouse, Mrs. Teresa Guthrie. Judge Van Amburg issued the letters after hearing evidence and declaring that Trooper Guthrie was killed in the line of duty on August 1, 2011.
The search for Trooper Guthrie continued for months. On January 12, 2012, Trooper Guthrie's body was recovered under approximately 3 1/2 feet of packed sand and silt, after a brush pile was removed during an excavation process. The recovery site was south of where K-9 Reed was found months earlier, near the original search site.
Trooper Guthrie is survived by his wife and three children. He is the 30th member of the Missouri State Highway Patrol to die in the line of duty.
